How to save objects of your own classes as Settings.


.NET 2.0 has a convenient mechanism for storing program configuration values. To add configuration settings to your program, right click the project in the Solution Explorer and choose Properties. Then click on the Settings tab. Now you can add named configuration settings for your program. For example, you could add an ArrayList named HighScores. Visual Studio automatically creates a Settings class containing your program's settings in a file named Settings.cs.
These settings are automatically loaded when your program launches. To save them, just call Properties.Settings.Default.Save() before your program shuts down. Configuration values can be accessed as properties of the Properties.Settings.Default object (e.g. Properties.Settings.Default.HighScores).
By default, your settings can only be objects of existing .NET types. But if you add a setting of type System.Collections.ArrayList, you can store objects of your own classes in the ArrayList.
Make sure that any class you store in the ArrayList includes the [Serializable] attribute above its class declaration. Also, you'll need to specify that a binary serializer is used to serialize and deserialize the ArrayList. To do this, declare a class like the following. You'll need to move the ArrayList declaration from the abovementioned Settings.cs into this class. Make sure to include a [SettingsSerializeAs(SettingsSerializeAs.Binary)] attribute above the ArrayList's declaration so that your objects are properly serialized and deserialized: using System;
